CHATEAU MARGAUX, 2023

PRIMEURS - LIVRAISON 2026

“The aromas of this young Margaux are very primary, reminding me of grape must fermenting in the vat, then transforming into perfume and flowers. Violets and roses. The wine is full-bodied, yet agile and bright, with lively acidity that makes it crisp and linear. As Alexis, one of Margaux's owners, said, this wine truly shows the DNA of the estate. Weightless. One of the wines of the vintage. pH 3.6. Blend of 89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verdot.” – James Suckling

En primeurs 2023

Vision of the 2023 Vintage
“This vintage once again shows us how capable great terroirs are of adapting and bringing out the full quality of the wine.” – Château Margaux

Viticulture
Winter was relatively mild, with some exceptions, and rainfall was sufficient to refill the superficial groundwater after a very hot and dry summer.
Budbreak occurred normally between April 3 and 10, and flowering was harmonious, with little coulure or millerandage, between May 31 and June 5. 2023 had some periods of humidity, which were quickly managed by the teams to preserve vineyard health. There was only one heatwave, between August 17 and 24, after which some grapes most exposed to UV rays experienced sunburn. Significant sorting had to be carried out.

Harvest
The merlot harvest began on September 11, followed by cabernet sauvignon on September 22. The picking was very precise and meticulous, ending on October 5.

Tasting of Château Margaux 2023
The 2023 Château Margaux is a fine, precise, and complex wine. It represents 41% of the total harvest volume. While it cannot match the exceptional density of its predecessor, it remains in the same aromatic lineage and features equally silky tannins.” – Château Margaux

Details chateau MARGAUX

History and anecdotes The history of the Château dates back to the 13th century when it was a fortress known as “Château de la Mothe Margaux”, the word “motte” meant “small hill” which is a rare relief on the Medoc plain. In the 15th century, the vineyard was structured thanks to the Lestonnac family, which anticipated the Medoc agricultural turn, abandoning cereal farming towards vine-growing. In 1855, the vineyard was classified as Premier Grand Cru in the 1855 classification. The estate was sold to André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, he started important modernization works. Nowadays, his daughter Corinne, keeps working on her father’s creation.
