Vintage 2023: The Winegrower's Time

« We love this vintage: its atypical character allows for a freedom of interpretation and highlights the differences. » - Domaines Barons de Rothschild

2023 in Pauillac began with abundant rainfall, with 500 millimeters of precipitation between the end of the harvest and spring. The humid spring encouraged the development of fungal diseases, requiring regular treatments, all while adhering to organic viticulture practices. Budbreak started later than usual, while flowering was typical, occurring in mid-May. July and August were marked by storms; however, rainfall was lower compared to surrounding appellations.  Two late heatwaves set the rhythm for the end of summer, in August and September. These high temperatures required careful monitoring of the vines and their ripening process to preserve acidity.

Key Dates

  • Budbreak: April 3
  • Mid-Flowering: June 26
  • Mid-Veraison: July 28
  • Harvest: September 4 - September 28

Wine Profile - L'Evangile or Les Argiles Bleues Sharply Defined
« At L’Evangile, Merlot often plays the leading role, with Cabernet Franc as its supporting partner. This year, the balance is more evenly distributed, creating a vintage with tension. Tension that kept us on high alert against mildew. Tension that we passionately seek in all our wines. The harvest began on September 4 with our young-gravel-plot Merlot. The week was particularly warm, accelerating ripening and creating a real shift. The first juices collected revealed red fruits with an energetic structure, just as Juliette and Olivier like: intriguing balances with alcohol levels around 13.5% and pH around 3.7. Harvesting decisions then followed a strictly “pedological” logic, with clay coming after the gravel, followed by sand. The tastings of our musts during vatting confirmed this hierarchy. This year, our Cabernet Franc grown on gravel provided structure, like a solid red-hued foundation, allowing our Merlot on blue clay to sharply stand out. » - Domaines Barons de Rothschild

Détails chateau L'EVANGILE

History and anecdotes

The Château l’Evangile history started in the middle of the 18th century, back then it was the Leglise family’s property. Château l’Evangile is located in the Pomerol plateau near Petrus and Château Cheval Blanc.

In 1868, the Cock Féret classification made it “Premier Cru of the Haut Pomerol”. In 1990, it belonged to Barons de Rothschild Lafite’s estates.

Éric de Rothschild, Saskia de Rothshild’s father, confessed to her he made two right decisions in his life: marrying her mother and buying L’Évangile.
