Chateau Léoville Las Cases: The exception among the two Grands Crus Classés

One of the oldest domains in the Médoc

The Château Léoville Las Cases shares a common past with the other two well-known Châteaux Léoville » i.e. Château Léoville Barton and Château Léoville Poyferré. In fact, these three chateaux were one and the same until the French Revolution. Château Léoville Las Cases unites 3/5 of the original estate, including the historic heart.

Château Léoville Las Cases has been run by the same family since the end of the 19th century, and is now managed by Jean-Hubert Delon. This historic wine estate is renowned for producing rare and iconic wines, with a prestigious heritage.

Timeless Quality

The estate has always pursued excellence, combining tradition and innovation. It stands out as one of the few vineyards to have remained unchanged since the 1855 classification. Impressively, Léoville Las Cases was one of the first wineries to adopt trellising in the 18th century;

From the terroir of « Clos », the former Domaine de Léoville, is produced the grand vin. Since 2007, a second wine, Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, has been made from selected plots, mainly from younger Merlot vines, and vinified in a more accessible style without having to keep it for decades;

With the 2023 vintage, the estate inaugurated a new state-of-the-art winery, further affirming its commitment to quality.

The Factor "Clos"

A neighbor of Château Latour, the estate is located on the border of the Pauillac appellation. The famous and emblematic Clos de Léoville Las Cases benefits from an exceptional terroir. The wines combine the powerful structure of Pauillac with the elegance and finesse of Saint-Julien.

Léoville Las Cases distinguishes itself from its two neighbors Léoville by a very specific character resulting from a unique terroir and strategic proximity to the Gironde. Its vines grow on gravelly soils with a sandy, clayey and gravelly subsoil. The river creates a microclimate that helps to influence extreme weather episodes, so the estate benefits from warm, sunny weather; The area benefits from warmer temperatures throughout the year, enabling it to withstand extreme heat in the summer and frost in the winter.

In 1976, the actor Louis de Fun, who played the role of food critic, quoted Léoville Las Cases in the film L'Aile ou la cuisse in the following terms: “This wine benefits from a fine south-western exposure, on a well-sloped hillside. It's a Saint Julien, Château Léoville Las Cases 1953!

Power Dominated by Cabernet

Located in the Saint-Julien appellation, known for its high concentration of grands crus classés, Léoville Las Cases is often considered the most coveted of the deuxièmes grands crus classés. It is thus nicknamed « the first of the seconds ».

His style is timeless, offering wines of complex aromatic depth that evolve magnificently over time. The signature of his wines lies in their powerful structure and unmistakable elegance.
