En primeurs 2023

2023 vintage : winemaker weather

"We love this vintage: its atypical character allows for freedom of interpretation and reveals differences." - Domaines Barons de Rothschild

2023 in Pauillac began with abundant rainfall, 500 millimeters of precipitation between the end of harvest and spring. The wet spring favored the development of fungal diseases and required regular treatment, all within the framework of organic viticulture. Bud break started later, while flowering was typical, in mid-May. July and August were marked by thunderstorms; however, precipitation was lower compared to surrounding appellations. Two late heatwaves punctuated the end of summer, in August and September. These high temperatures required careful monitoring of vineyards and their ripening to preserve acidity.

Key dates

  • Bud Break: April 9
  • Mid-Flowering: June 1
  • Mid-Veraison: July 31
  • Harvest: September 7 to September 29

Wine Profile - Lafite or The Balance of Forces
"To achieve balance at Lafite, there's no need to come in with heavy boots. This year, more than ever, Lafite quietly asserted itself, without drawing attention. In the vineyard, it questioned. Following successive heatwaves, we expected a shock, a tipping point, but our vines continued their trajectories, serene, the grapes ripening while maintaining precious tension. In the cellar, extractions must be precise, we're down to the day, with a racking schedule where the right choices must be made. Under Olivier's guidance, we decided to blend our finest lots destined for the grand vin earlier than usual, starting in December. And there, balance is achieved! A quiet power emerges this year from the blend. Like an illustration where individuals facing each other would shake hands, the parcels are built together, reminding us that nothing beats the art of blending at our estate." - Domaines Barons de Rothschild

Détails chateau LAFITE ROTHSCHILD

History and anecdotes The history of Château Lafite Rothschild dates back to the 13th century. Until the 17th century, the estate was a co-seigniory, with the owners receiving rents from farmers who cultivated the lands, some of which were already dedicated to vine cultivation. Between 1670 and 1680, Jacques de Ségur restructured the vineyard. In 1695, Jacques de Ségur's son married the heiress of Château Latour, thus uniting the histories of the two estates for several decades.
