Vintage 2023: Winemaker's Time

"We love this vintage: its atypical character allows for freedom of interpretation and reveals differences." - Domaines Barons de Rothschild

2023 in Pauillac began with abundant rainfall, 500 millimeters of precipitation between the end of harvest and spring. The wet spring favored the development of fungal diseases and required regular treatment, all within the framework of organic viticulture. Bud break started later, while flowering was typical, in mid-May. July and August were marked by thunderstorms; however, precipitation was lower compared to surrounding appellations. Two late heatwaves punctuated the end of summer, in August and September. These high temperatures required careful monitoring of vineyards and their ripening to preserve acidity.

Key Dates

  • Bud Break: April 9
  • Mid-Flowering: June 1
  • Mid-Veraison: July 31
  • Harvest: September 7 to September 29

Wine Profile - Carruades or Chasing Two Hares at Once
Defining the right harvest dates for Lafite's plots was one of the challenges of the vintage. Some Cabernet came before the Merlot, in a duo dance where both grape varieties leaned on each other to help us define ripeness and the wine profile. We would taste the berries of one, then the other to decide when the plots would be ready. The result? In our quest to make a great Carruades that tells its vintage story, it's not a 4-grape Carruades this year. There's only Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, looking at each other, and telling their complementarity. In the end, we managed to catch these two hares at the right moment. This year, "Caudeyrac," a mythical plot on the plateau of Lafite, gives our Carruades a more Pauillac character than ever. In aging, we are experimenting with the use of wooden vats from our historic vinification cellar for part of our Carruades blend." - Domaines Barons de Rothschild

Détails chateau CARRUADES DE LAFITE

History and anecdotes Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild. The chateau is located in the Médoc, in the Pauillac appellation and is a premier cru classé in 1855. The history of Chateau Lafite Rothschild begins in the 13th century. Until the 17th century, the estate is co-seigniory and some lands are already dedicated to the culture of the vine. Between 1670 and 1680, Jacques de Ségur structured the vineyard and in 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the château.
