CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL, 2024

PRIMEURS - LIVRAISON 2027

« The Cos d'Estournel 2024 promises to be magnificent. Offering aromas of sweet blackcurrant, plum, pencil shavings, and iris, it is medium to full-bodied, supple, and smooth. Cos is an early-ripening terroir, which clearly played to the strengths of the vintage. » - Robert Parker, William Kelley

En primeurs 2024

Vision of the 2024 Vintage
« Crafting a great wine is a daily commitment, and each vintage is a new opportunity to be reminded of that. The 2024 vintage, notably marked by a relentless struggle in the vineyard and late ripening, was a true balancing act. The incredible resilience of our terroirs, combined with the old age of the vines, allowed us to guide a vintage that ultimately holds great promise.
It is therefore with great pride that I present this vintage of remarkable subtlety. » - Michel Reybier

Viticulture
2024 began with a very rainy season — 660 mm of rain fell between October 2023 and January 2024. Temperatures remained cool from April to mid-July, slowing both downy mildew development and vine growth. Flowering occurred on May 27, and the low temperatures caused coulure and millerandage. Yields were lower, but this naturally aerated the bunches and helped preserve the vineyard's health. Early leaf removal was carried out as early as June. From mid-July to late August, the weather was dry and warm, allowing the berries to achieve good ripeness, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Light rainfall in September slightly rehydrated the vines before the harvest period.

Harvest
The harvest took place from September 23 to October 7.

Aging
The wine was aged in 50% new oak barrels.

Tasting – Château Cos d’Estournel Blanc 2024
« With an average age of 55 years, Cos d’Estournel comes from the estate’s oldest vines. Its early-ripening terroirs, combined with the southern exposure of part of the vineyard, played a crucial role in the success and precision of this vintage.
Cos d’Estournel delights with its aromas of licorice and raspberry, its velvety texture, and its heady yet never heavy character.
The palate is very powerful on the attack, with continuity through the mid-palate, a structure that provides great length, and a distinguished finish. » - Château Cos d’Estournel

Histoire et anecdotes

The history of the Cos d’Estournel which is located in Saint-Estèphe, started in 1811 when Louis Gaspard d’Estournel bought vines, in addition to those he already inherited. The origin of the name “Cos”, which means “hill of stones” in old Gascon, highlights the estate’s ideal location. The Château architecture is unique with magnificent pagodas, a door which came from Zanzibar and many ornaments which remind of the exoticism of the Orient. The estate’s wines were exported to India during the 19th century. In 1855, Cos d’Estournel was classified as Second Grand Cru. In 2000, Michel Reybier became the owner of the château.

The founder, Louis Gaspard D’Estournel, is nicknamed the Saint-Estèphe maharajah because of his open-mindedness and Orient fascination. In 2004, the Cos D’Estournel 2001 vintage was ranked within the Wine Spectator Top 100 thanks to its 94/100 mark. For the 2016 vintage, Cos D’Estournel was scored with the perfect mark of 100/100 by Robert Parker and James Suckling.
