CHATEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE, 2024

En primeurs 2024
Vision of the 2024 Vintage, ‘After the rain…’
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande expresses itself in these few words: ‘Its expression in one sentence?
“A rainy vintage, a vintage ____________.”
Fill in the blank.
Viticulture
A very rainy spring where wearing a parka was a must for the teams. With approximately 900 mm of rainfall between October 2023 and March 2024, a new rainfall record was set in the vineyard’s history. The soils were replenished with water reserves; however, the vineyard's sanitary condition was fragile: coulure, millerandage, and mildew affected all grape varieties. The conversion to organic farming was challenging, testing the teams, as it allows only the use of copper in limited quantities to treat vine diseases.
The start of summer was timid, but it finally arrived to support vine growth. It was in full swing from mid-July to the end of August to ripen the berries. However, the back-to-school period was rainy, and the Indian summer struggled to settle in to allow full maturity. The monitoring was very precise and rigorous to control phenolic ripeness and also to preserve the vineyard’s sanitary health. Upon tasting the berries in the vineyard, there was a hint of 1998 and 2008 in the air.
Harvest
The harvest took place from September 23 to October 9, with a two-week delay compared to the previous two years. The ripeness of the three grape varieties was homogeneous.
After very meticulous sorting, the yield was lower than usual, but the quality was there.
Wine Profile
“A broad base of Cabernet Sauvignon – Pauillac power – touched by the silky grace of Merlot – the Comtesse’s signature – and a fresh note of Cabernet Franc... The 2024 vintage, through patience and delicate attention, was finally blended in early February.” - Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
