En primeurs 2024

Vintage 2024, “A Vintner’s Vintage”
“Challenges Transcended
It is indeed the sky that governs the actions and thoughts of those who make wine. There lies the art of enhancing what nature offers. With patience, expertise, and meticulousness, we strive to create the finest, brightest, and most elegant wines.”

Viticulture
Winter was mild, 1.3°C above seasonal averages, and wet, with 785 mm of precipitation compared to the average 464 mm. These conditions triggered early budburst on March 20, reminiscent of the 2012 vintage.
This water abundance allowed the soil to build a strategic reserve following previous years' heatwaves but also opened the door to diseases. Increased attention was necessary throughout the vine and grape growth cycle to ensure vineyard health.
Flowering was late, with the first flowers appearing on May 21. Summer was delayed but settled in mid-July, with a notably warm August. One-third of August days recorded temperatures exceeding 30°C, including two days above 35°C.

Harvest
Merlot harvest took place over four days: September 20, 23, 24, and 25, while Cabernet was harvested over two days: October 1 and 4. In total, 776 hours of harvesting were dedicated to picking the grapes at the optimal moment. Yield was low to ensure optimal concentration and quality, at 22 hl/ha. Sorting was meticulous, lasting 38 hours, to retain only the best.

Aging
The wine was aged in 70% new French oak barrels. There was a change in the aging process; previously, it included the use of amphorae at a rate of 3 to 5%.

Vinification
The 15 plots were vinified separately, including three integral vinifications. The introduction of a mini-vat for this vintage allowed for intra-plot vinification.

Wine Profile
“A magical vintage, 2024 is in many respects. While it sometimes tested vintners' nerves, it delights with its charm. Its decidedly fruity aromatic profile, the softness of its tannins, its invigorating freshness, and its very moderate alcohol level make it a vintage crafted for pleasure: full of creaminess, pleasantly dense, flavorful, and balanced. In a word, it embraces a certain 'classicism' very characteristic of Pomerol, which should make it an appealing wine for all enthusiasts, even over time.” – Château La Conseillante

History and anecdotes

Château La Conseillante, located in Pomerol, has been the Nicolas family’s property for more than 150 years. The estate’s history started in the 18th century when Catherine Conseillan built the vineyard and gave it her name. It is one of the most famous estates, near Cheval Blanc and Petrus. The steady quality over the centuries makes its success.

La Conseillante marked a strategic milestone in the seventies when they integrated one of the first technological wine cellars of the region which enabled them to create more precise cuvées. In 2012, they built a plot-by-plot vat room in order to go further in the pursuit of excellence.
