En primeurs 2024

Vision 2024
« Our credo – living soils, circular economy, and 100% organic farming – lies at the heart of our commitment, shared by our family, our team, and the entire estate. Our young vine cellar, powered by positive energy, along with Gaia, our newly inaugurated climate-smart space unveiled during the en primeur tastings, embodies this pact with life. » - Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

Climatic Conditions
The 2024 vintage is initially marked by coolness: winter was warmer while spring was cooler. Then, the 2024 vintage was characterized by record precipitation, with very rainy winter and spring seasons, leading to the appearance of mildew. Summer was salvaging, with July and August matching seasonal averages in temperature and rainfall. September was cool, recording temperatures 20% below the average of the last 25 years.

The Vineyard in 2024
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is managed using organic and biodynamic farming. This commitment to nature and the ecosystem was very challenging for this wet vintage. Budburst was early after a warmer winter; however, mildew appeared as early as early April, complicating daily vineyard management. Faced with this major challenge, Smith Haut Lafitte adopted a successful strategy combining small doses of copper with plant infusions and decoctions. Soil work, deep rooting of vines with an average age of 49 years, and controlled vigor allowed the vineyard to be resilient.

Harvest
Harvesting was done by hand and slightly later compared to 2023. Grapes were picked in small crates from August 29 to September 13. The yield is low, at 35hl/ha, before selection for the blend of the three wines.

Vinification
Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (50% new wood) after cold static settling.

Aging
Aging lasts 12 months on lees in barrels (50% new and 50% one-wine-used), made in our on-site cooperage.

2024 Vintage Profile
« This wine is a superb Smith Haut Lafitte White, driven and structured by great freshness, perfectly balanced by remarkable roundness. The result is a fine, elegant, chiselled wine, with extreme aromatic purity. » – Fabien TEITGEN
