En primeurs 2024

Vision 2024, under the sign of trust and hope
« Our credo – living soils, circular economy, and 100% organic farming – lies at the heart of our commitment, shared by our family, our team, and the entire estate. Our young vine cellar, powered by positive energy, along with Gaia, our newly inaugurated climate-smart space unveiled during the en primeur tastings, embodies this pact with life. » - Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

Climatic Conditions
The 2024 vintage is first marked by coolness: the winter was warmer while the spring remained cooler. Then, 2024 was defined by record precipitation, with very rainy winter and spring seasons, leading to the appearance of mildew. Summer brought relief, with July and August meeting seasonal averages for temperature and rainfall. September was cool, with temperatures 20% below the 25-year average.

The Vineyard in 2024
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is managed using organic and biodynamic agriculture. This commitment to nature and the ecosystem was highly challenging during this wet vintage. Budburst occurred early after a warmer winter, but mildew appeared as early as early April, complicating the daily management of the vineyard. To address this major challenge, Smith Haut Lafitte adopted a winning strategy combining small doses of copper with herbal teas and decoctions. Soil work, the deep rooting of vines averaging 49 years of age, and controlled vigor allowed the vineyard to remain resilient.

Red Wine Harvest
The early and long flowering took place from May 22 to June 10 and was homogeneous. Veraison occurred between July 23 and August 20. Harvesting began on September 18 and ended on October 9.
The yield is low, at 26hl/ha, before selection for the blend of the three wines.

Vinification
Vinification is carried out with whole berries in small wooden vats at 28°C. A very gentle extraction is performed through manual punch-downs.

Aging
Aging lasts 18 months in barrels (60% new barrels made in our on-site cooperage) with aging on lees. Only one racking is done, then aging is adjusted for each wine.

2024 Vintage Profile
« This Smith Haut Lafitte Red 2024 shows superb overall harmony, with great energy and a beautiful texture, while expressing a fresh and magnificent aromatic complexity, characteristic of our gravelly soils. » – Fabien TEITGEN
