CHATEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON, 2009

SAINT-JULIEN

" Clearly superior to its estate sibling, Langoa Barton, the Léoville Barton 2009 from owner Anthony Barton is another massive, incredibly rich, tannic wine with the potential for very long aging. Designed for lovers of classic flavors, it displays a dense opaque purple color along with a bouquet of licorice, underbrush, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and a touch of earth. The wine reveals impressive density and richness, a full-bodied and flavorful palate, as well as marked tannins on the finish. However, these tannins exhibit a softness with no trace of bitterness or astringency, a hallmark of a great vintage and perfectly ripe grapes. Still a monolithic baby, this 2009 should be forgotten for at least a decade and then enjoyed over the following 30 to 50 years. " - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes

In the 19th century, the Léoville estate, in the Saint-Julien appellation, was one of the largest crus. It was later divided into three estates: Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton, and Château Léoville Poyferré. A part of the Léoville estate was purchased in 1826 by the Irishman Hugh Barton, marking the birth of Château Léoville Barton, which is still owned by the Barton family. The finesse of its wines allowed it to be classified as a 2nd Grand Cru during the 1855 classification.
