CHATEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON, 2010

SAINT-JULIEN

"A splendid performance, far superior in bottle than it was in barrel, Léoville Barton is one of the spectacular wines of the vintage. With intense violet color all the way to the rim, its imposing tannins give this wine a potential longevity of 30 to 50 years. It is a classic and powerful Bordeaux, crafted without compromise. A star of the vintage, this wine presents notes of ink and crème de cassis, good acidity, soft and subtle oak, as well as massive extraction and concentration. I thought it was one of the most closed wines of the vintage two years ago, and nothing has changed during its barrel aging, except that the wine now seems even richer, denser, and more expansive than I had imagined. The magnificent purity, symmetry, and imposing finish of nearly a minute make this wine one of Léoville Barton's timeless classics. Anticipated maturity: 2028-2065+. " - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes

In the 19th century, the Léoville estate, in the Saint-Julien appellation, was one of the largest crus. It was later divided into three estates: Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton, and Château Léoville Poyferré. A part of the Léoville estate was purchased in 1826 by the Irishman Hugh Barton, marking the birth of Château Léoville Barton, which is still owned by the Barton family. The finesse of its wines allowed it to be classified as a 2nd Grand Cru during the 1855 classification.
