History and anecdotes
The history of the Cos d’Estournel which is located in Saint-Estèphe, started in 1811 when Louis Gaspard d’Estournel bought vines, in addition to those he already inherited. The origin of the name “Cos”, which means “hill of stones” in old Gascon, highlights the estate’s ideal location. The Château architecture is unique with magnificent pagodas, a door which came from Zanzibar and many ornaments which remind of the exoticism of the Orient. The estate’s wines were exported to India during the 19th century. In 1855, Cos d’Estournel was classified as Second Grand Cru. In 2000, Michel Reybier became the owner of the château.
The founder, Louis Gaspard D’Estournel, is nicknamed the Saint-Estèphe maharajah because of his open-mindedness and Orient fascination. In 2004, the Cos D’Estournel 2001 vintage was ranked within the Wine Spectator Top 100 thanks to its 94/100 mark. For the 2016 vintage, Cos D’Estournel was scored with the perfect mark of 100/100 by Robert Parker and James Suckling.

2022 VINTAGE | " 2022 is a vintage of myriad emotions : the hallmark opulence of Cos d'Estournel is a magnificent counterpoint to the vintage's diaphanous quality and a freshness that is somewhat unexpected in the light of the year's unusual weather. " - Château Cos d'Estournel |
WINEGROWING | In November and December 2021, rainfall allowed the clay soils to replenish with water. From February to April 2022, the bud break was precocious and frost hit the night of April 4, 2022. The consequences are contained thanks to a meticulous pruning work. From May to June 2022, the heat is installed allowing a homogeneous flowering then some rain at the end of June allows to relieve the vine. However, July and August were marked by two heatwaves. Working the soils and old vines aged on average 45 years enable Château Cos d'Estournel to adapt to those climatic extremes. Then, in September 2022, the harvest starts early - earliest harvest since 1989 - on August 29 and ends on September 13. |
