History and anecdotes

The history of Cos d’Estournel, located in Saint-Estèphe, begins in 1811 when Louis Gaspard d’Estournel purchased vines to complement those he had inherited. The origin of the name "Cos," meaning "hill of pebbles" in old Gascon, highlights the ideal location of the estate. The architecture of the château is unique, with its sumptuous pagodas, a gate from Zanzibar, and various ornaments evoking the exoticism of the Orient. As early as the 19th century, the estate's wines were exported to India. In 1855, Cos d’Estournel was classified as a Second Growth Grand Cru. In 2000, Michel Reybier became the owner of the château.

The open-mindedness and fascination with the Orient of its founder, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, earned him the nickname "Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe." In 2004, the 2001 vintage of Cos d’Estournel was included in Wine Spectator's Top 100, achieving a score of 94/100. For the 2016 vintage, Cos d’Estournel received the perfect score of 100/100 from Robert Parker and James Suckling.
