VINTAGE 2021

Nicknamed the "Vintage of attentiveness", Château Pontet-Canet expresses about the 2021 vintage: "An exceptional year in every respect. Doubts, fears, and finally relief thanks to a fortunate late season. What we find in this vintage was completely unexpected. Generous fruit, a structured palate, an appealing concentration. 2021, unquestionably the winemaker’s vintage, mediator and intimate of nature, who managed to adapt to extreme weather conditions and understand the temperament of each plot. It was a gamble on adaptation and intuition. A successful one."

VITICULTURE

The winter was mild and rainy, leading to early budburst in mid-March, a week earlier than 2020, itself an early vintage. Anticipating unpredictable weather, the soil was worked to protect the buds. Pontet-Canet was spared from frost in early April thanks to its location near the estuary, though the cold spell slowed down the vegetative cycle. Flowering was even and began on a typical date for the Pauillac region, May 24. The rains in June—unseen in twenty years—combined with rising temperatures created pressure on the teams to protect the vines. The herbal preparation room set up in the vineyard in 2021 allowed the teams to be responsive. Veraison began on July 19, and the grape varieties ripened almost synchronously. Parcel-based harvesting started on September 24 and ended on October 12.

VINIFICATION

In the cellar, Pontet-Canet 2021 was easily extracted with some punching down and pumping over. The wine is aged 50% in new barrels, 35% in concrete amphorae, and the rest in one-wine barrels.

Histoire et anecdotes

Created by Jean-François de Pontet at the beginning of the 18th century, the vineyard was expanded a few decades later with the acquisition of plots in the locality known as Canet. Château Pontet-Canet is renowned for the high quality of its wines, which was confirmed when it was classified as a 5th Growth of Pauillac in 1855. In 1975, Château Pontet-Canet became the property of the Tesseron family, cognac merchants. It was from 1994 that Alfred Tesseron revolutionized vineyard management methods by adopting sustainable farming techniques focused on biodynamics.

Château Pontet-Canet is one of the estates in the Médoc that has had only three families of owners throughout its history.
