CHATEAU MONTROSE, 2009

SAINT-ESTEPHE

" Harvested between 17 September and 5 October, this wine always seems ready to work, as it were, like the great 1982s. The summer of 2009 was very hot and dry, which made it possible to start the harvest fairly early. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Jean Bernard Delmas' objective was to find the perfect balance between freshness and concentration, given the incredible opulence and voluptuous character of this vintage. That's what this wine has in abundance. A stunning dense purple colour, the wine has soft, velvety tannins and an extremely open, opulent nose of blueberry, blackberry and crème de cassis. There's scorched earth, vanilla and, once again, revealing liquorice and spice. The texture is unctuous, thicker and juicier than the 2010, and the attack is more forthright. This wine should come into its own in five years' time. Once again, it has the potential to age for at least 50 years. Drink between 2019 and 2069. " - Robert Parker
