History and anecdotes
The existence of the Château dates back to the 17th century. It was successively owned by Abbé Gruaud and then by Chevalier Joseph Sébastien Larose. In 1781, the name Château Gruaud-Larose was established, combining the surnames of its previous owners. Château Gruaud Larose was classified as a second growth in 1855, under the Saint-Julien appellation. In 1997, the château was purchased by the Merlaut family. Today, Jean Merlaut is at the head of the estate.
The name of the château's second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose, comes from one of the owners in 1867, Baron Sarget.
The motto of Château Gruaud Larose is "The King of Wines, The Wine of Kings."
