VIEUX CHATEAU CERTAN, 2010

POMEROL

"The Vieux Château Certan 2010, a blend of 86% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, has an alcohol level of 14.5%. Production was lower than in 2009 and the alcohol slightly higher, but with a pH of 3.7, which remains surprisingly reasonable given the power and alcoholic richness of this full-bodied wine. With a dense purple color, the 2010 reveals a vibrant and fascinating array of spices, red, blue, and black fruits, crushed rock, and spring flowers. The oak is skillfully hidden behind remarkable concentration and opulence. With exceptional purity, this incredible wine flirts with perfection. Unfortunately, there is 20% less of it than in 2009, and its tannins will require 8 to 10 years of cellaring, as it may very well close down. This 2010 vintage is another age-worthy wine, meant to evolve over 40 to 50 years, and is sure to generate great interest among enthusiasts.

Thienpont believes that with the 2008, 2009, and 2010 vintages, he has achieved the greatest trilogy in the history of Vieux Château Certan, rivaling the legendary 1947, 1948, and 1949." - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes

It is the oldest wine estate classified in Pomerol appellation - it dates back to the 16th century - Vieux Château Certan’s origines came from a Scottish family: the Demay family. It was bought by George Thienpont, a wine merchant practising in Belgium, in 1924, and has been run by his heirs since the end of the fifties.

The Vieux Château Certan estate is mentioned by the engineer geographer Belleyme on his famous 1785 map.
