VIEUX CHATEAU CERTAN, 2001

POMEROL

"I have noticed that several vintages from 2000 are finally surpassing those from 2001 this year, after a long period where the 2001 vintage clearly stood out. However, there are still moments when 2001 reigns supreme, and this Vieux Château Certan is a perfect example. It unfolds slowly, gaining strength as it opens, with notes of blackberry, plum, raspberry, as well as truffle, roasted almonds, tobacco leaf, and ash. This is an ideal moment to open and enjoy this wine, crafted to be shared." - Jane Anson 100/100

History and anecdotes

The oldest documented vineyard in the Pomerol appellation – its history dates back to the 16th century – Vieux Château Certan has its origins in a Scottish family: the Demay family. It was Georges Thienpont, a wine merchant based in Belgium, who purchased it in 1924, and it has been managed by his heirs since the late 1950s.

The Vieux Château Certan estate is mentioned by the engineer-geographer Belleyme on his famous 1785 map.
