CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD, 2006

PAUILLAC

" One of the fabulous surprises from my tastings, although I suggested last year that it could improve in quality, the Lafite Rothschild 2006 is an exceptional wine, crafted from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. When I tasted it in the barrel, it reminded me of their successful 1988 vintage, but it is far superior to that vintage. Frankly, it could prove to be as good as the 2005, which is considered a much greater vintage across Bordeaux than 2006. Lafite's rigorous selection process (only 42% of the harvest was used for the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine with an extraordinary aroma of charcoal, truffles, pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet notes of ripe cassis and cedar. A wine of remarkable intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins and impressive concentration, this Lafite Rothschild has proven to be outstanding and should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but it will age for three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2035+." - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes
The château located in Médoc, was classified as Premier Cru in the 1855 classification, in Pauillac appellation. The Château Lafite Rothschild history started in the 13th century.. Until the 17th century, the estate was a co-lordship whose co-owners received the rents from farmers who were cultivating the lands, some of which were already dedicated to the culture of vine. Between 1670 and 1680, Jacques de Ségure structured the vineyard. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired Château Lafite.
