History and anecdotes
Château Figeac is classified “B” as Premier Grand Cru in Saint-Emilion appellation. The estate would be named after the Figeacus family who, in the 2nd century, settled where the actual Château is.
The estate's history started in the 15th century. Several owners succeeded each other and some of them sold plots which are now part of the Cheval Blanc vineyard. In 1892, the estate became the Manoncourt family’s property. Thierry Manoncourt, forerunner of the vineyard scientific approach, is behind the creation of the Figeac style.
Figeac’s nickname is “the most Medoc of the Saint-Emilion” because of its atypical grape varieties mainly composed of Cabernet.
The estate has 12 hectares of pasture, 100-year-old trees, as well as a large orchard, which is in favour of biodiversity and the development of pollinating insects.
Caracteristics
CHARACTERISTICS
RANKING | 1st Growth A, Saint-Emilion |
GRAPE VARIETIES | 35% merlot, 34% cabernet franc, 31% cabernet sauvignon |
2022 VINTAGE | "The resilience of our vines and the quality of the berries impressed us because they were leading us to an exceptional wine, well beyond the great vintage that the excessive climate of the year could have predicted. These are the identity and the great strengths of its terroir, which Château-Figeac 2022 expresses, in fullness. "-Chateau-Figeac |
VINE GROWING | The high temperatures and the strong sunshine from the month of May have caused a dazzling growth of the vine: the veraison is early, the maturation is slow until the harvest. The work in the vineyard following the principles of agro-ecology allowed to mitigate this solar vintage and to preserve the freshness in the grapes and in the soils. The harvest began on September 1st - the earliest harvest in the 130 years that the Manoncourt family has been at the head of the Château - and ended on September 26th. |
WINE MAKING | The vinification is done on a parcel-by-parcel basis in order to reveal the potential of the terroir of each parcel. The vinification is carried out without sulphur, without punching down and with low fermentation temperatures. |
AGEING | The wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels. |
FORMAT | 75 cl |
