History and anecdotes
Château Beychevelle is a prestigious Cru Classé with a history dating back to the 16th century. Powerful families lived in, especially Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the First Duke of Epernon and Grand Admiral of France, who bought the estate under the reign of Henri II. According to the legend, ships that would pass ahead of his Château had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance, that is why it was named Beychevelle: “lower sails”. Nowadays, Grands Millésimes de France (Castel and Suntory Group) own the estate.
Caracteristics
CHARACTERISTICS
CLASSIFICIATION | 4th Grand Cru Classé in 1855 |
GRAPE VARIETIES | 57% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot, 3% petit verdot et 2% cabernet franc |
2021 VINTAGE | Chateau Beychevelle expresses itself on the 2021 vintage "A technical year that has given us some nice surprises in the glass! On tasting, Beychevelle 2021 is remarkable for its freshness and intensity. The bouquet is an explosion of ripe red fruits: wild strawberries, raspberries, red currants. The palate is supported by a beautiful tannic structure, silky, powerful and complex, reminiscent of the noble and elegant character of the great Saint-Julien. " |
WINEGROWING | The winter is mild, and Château Beychevelle is spared the frost episodes that occur in April and May thanks to its proximity to the Gironde estuary. The months of May, June and July were marked by rainy episodes and temperatures on average below the seasonal norms, leading to the development of mildew. August and September were sunny and allowed the grapes to reach optimal maturity. |
WINEMAKING | Vinification by the traditional method in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. The malolactic fermentation is carried out. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, 70% of which are new. |
BOTTLE SIZE | 75 CL |
