CHATEAU BEYCHEVELLE, 2010

SAINT-JULIEN

"Showing better in bottle than it did in barrel, where it was already impressive but not quite at this level, the 2010 Beychevelle reveals notes of ripe cassis, black cherry, and forest floor, with a medium to full-bodied texture, impressive purity, and moderately elevated tannins (though they softened considerably during barrel aging). Structured and rich for a Beychevelle, this wine should easily withstand three decades of aging. I would give it another 3 to 4 years of bottle aging, but this is a remarkable effort from the first château one sees upon entering the St.-Julien appellation."– Robert Parker

History and anecdotes
Château Beychevelle is a prestigious Cru Classé with a history dating back to the 16th century. Powerful families have resided there, notably the First Duke of Épernon and Grand Admiral of France, Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, who acquired the property under Henry II. According to legend, ships passing in front of his Château had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance, hence the name Beychevelle: "lower sail." Today, the estate is owned by Grands Millésimes de France (Castel and Suntory groups).
