CHATEAU LÉOVILLE LAS CASES, 2002

SAINT-JULIEN

"Only 43% of the production was included in the final blend of this remarkable 2002 vintage. Produced from a low yield of 17 hectoliters per hectare, it consists of 66.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the highest alcohol content ever achieved in a Léoville Las Cases (13.5%) and a high pH of 3.85. Nevertheless, the overall impression is of a structured wine with considerable density, a ruby/purple color, layers of flavors, and a classic personality throughout. The wine exhibits pure aromas of blackcurrant, notes of licorice-infused fruits, great breadth, a viscous mid-palate, and a long, intoxicating finish. I think this wine won't be as charming as the 2003 in its youth, but it hasn't closed down yet, and I am amazed at how rich, intense, and powerful it remains even after bottling. It is certainly one of the contenders for the title of wine of the vintage among half a dozen others." - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes
Until the 19th century, the Léoville estate, in the Saint-Julien appellation (Médoc), was one of the largest crus. It was then divided into three estates: Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton, and Château Léoville Poyferré. The Château de Léoville Las Cases comprises 3/5 of the original estate and was inherited by the Las Cases family. Léoville Las Cases has been managed by the same family since the end of the 19th century, currently represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, the sole owner of the Château.
