CHATEAU LATOUR, 2002

PAUILLAC

The wine from the vintage? There are only 10,000 cases of this extraordinarily rich and dense wine from the 2002 vintage, which is as powerful as the 2003 (even the alcohol level is nearly identical, at 12.85%). Its color is a deep ruby/purple all the way to the rim of the glass, with notes of English walnuts, crushed stones, blackcurrant, and underbrush. On the palate, it is dense, opulent, and full-bodied while remaining classic, with spectacular aromatics, remarkable purity, and a finish that lasts more than 50 seconds. This wine displays impressive richness, and its soft tannins may be deceiving, as it seems destined for very long aging. Administrator Frédéric Engerer appears more satisfied with Latour's 2002 vintage than with any other recent vintage. Hats off to him for this extraordinary achievement, accomplished in a year that would not have been perceived as conducive to producing such quality raw material. Estimated maturity period: 2012-2045.

History and anecdotes

The Château Latour history, classified as Premier Grand Cru in the 1855 classification, started in the 14th century when they built a fortified tower during the One Hundred Years War. Until the end of the 16th century, Latour was a co-lordship whose co-owners received rent from farmers who cultivated lands, some of which were already dedicated to the culture of the vines. Then, in the 18th century, the winegrowing saga speeded up when the marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, the “Prince of the vines”, also owner of Château Calon Ségur and Lafite, became the owner of the estate. Since 1993, François Pinault and the Artémis group have been the majority owner (93%) and 7% has belonged to the Ségur family’s heirs.

Château Latour left the En Primeur Allocation system. The Château only offers wines ready to drink, the commercialisation does not occur by La Place de Bordeaux anymore.
