History and anecdotes
Classified as a Third Growth in the famous 1855 classification, Château Kirwan is located in the Margaux appellation. The château takes its name from the Irishman Mark Kirwan, who managed the estate in 1760 after its acquisition in 1751 by his English father-in-law, Sir John Collingwood, a wine merchant.
The quality of Château Kirwan was quickly recognized, even before the 1855 classification. It was described by Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States, as a "second rank grand cru" in a work dating from 1787.
In March 2017, the inauguration of a new cellar marked a new qualitative turning point.
