History and anecdotes
The history of the Cos d’Estournel which is located in Saint-Estèphe, started in 1811 when Louis Gaspard d’Estournel bought vines, in addition to those he already inherited. The origin of the name “Cos”, which means “hill of stones” in old Gascon, highlights the estate’s ideal location. The Château architecture is unique with magnificent pagodas, a door which came from Zanzibar and many ornaments which remind of the exoticism of the Orient. The estate’s wines were exported to India during the 19th century. In 1855, Cos d’Estournel was classified as Second Grand Cru. In 2000, Michel Reybier became the owner of the château.
The founder, Louis Gaspard D’Estournel, is nicknamed the Saint-Estèphe maharajah because of his open-mindedness and Orient fascination. In 2004, the Cos D’Estournel 2001 vintage was ranked within the Wine Spectator Top 100 thanks to its 94/100 mark. For the 2016 vintage, Cos D’Estournel was scored with the perfect mark of 100/100 by Robert Parker and James Suckling.
