CARILLON D'ANGELUS, 2022

PRIMEURS - LIVRAISON 2025

Tasting notes for the 2022 vintage : " The wine exhibits a lively, deep, dense, dark purple colour. the aromas were carefully preserved throughout the vinification process and display a vast array of fresh black fruits and an intensely floral side reminiscent of violets. Smooth and juicy but also delicate and precise on the palate, the 2022 reveals the hallmark freshness and verticality of the Cabernet Franc. The oak is already well-integrated, allowing crisp, flavoursome ripe fruit to come to the fore. A long and spicy finish, underpinned by silky, tight-knit tannins. The wine's flavours linger long in the mouth, seemingly never wanting to end. This vintage is rich in salinity and complex and has great tension and freshness. It shows the immense capacity of the Angelus terroir to adapt to climate adversity. "

CHARACTERISTICS

RANKING Second wine of Château Angélus, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
BLEND 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc
2022 VINTAGE « This vintage isn't just unprecedented, it's extraordinary, in the most literal sense of the word. We've named it the 'Majestic' vintage, since its outstanding characteristics propel it into another domain, an unparalleled one.  » - Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal
WINEGROWING The winter is mild and dry, causing an early bud-break. Spring was mild with a few storms bringing the water necessary for the growth of the vine. The flowering and the fruit set took place in excellent conditions, the first signs of a abundant crop. In spite of a hot and dry summer, the work in the vineyard allowed to limit water evaporation. The veraison and the ripening of the berries took place slowly and a stormy episode at the end of August relieved the vines. For Château Angélus, this vintage is "The combination of our terroirs' clay soils and important work carried out on our cover crops in the vineyard rows enabled the vines to grow without ever lacking water and produce abundant and magnificent fruit throughout the whole of this hot, dry summer, which was not unlike the great post-war vintages of 1945, 1947 and 1949."
WINEMAKING The vinification is carried out in inverted tronco-conical stainless steel vats. The vat-filling and extraction are using gravity-flow. The temperature of the cold soak is 8°C and it rises to 28°C for the alcoholic fermentation. The post-fermentation maceration lasts 1 to 3 weeks at a temperature varying from 28 to 30°C.
AGEING The wine is aged for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels with fine-grains and medium char, 60% of which are new.
FORMAT 75 cl

History and anecdotes

Carillon d'Angélus is the second wine of Château Angélus, born with the 1987 vintage.

For eight generations, the Château has been owned by the de Boüard de Laforest family. The vineyard of Angelus is located in the heart of a natural amphitheater, dominated by the three churches of Saint-Emilion. In the heart of this privileged site, the sounds are amplified and one could once hear the bells ringing the angelus in the morning, at noon and in the evening. In 2012 the Château was classified as a Premier Grand Cru classé A in the Saint Emilion Classification. Today Stéphanie de Boüard - Rivoal manages the estate.
