VIEUX CHATEAU CERTAN, 2009

POMEROL

"The 2009 vintage, showing nearly 14% natural alcohol, exquisite ripeness, and an incredibly complex bouquet of Asian spices, fruitcake, licorice, smoke, blackberries, and blackcurrant, is simply sublime. A blend of 84% Merlot and the remainder split equally between Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers a viscous texture along with remarkable freshness and liveliness, considering its weight, richness, and potential power. This extraordinary effort is one of the greatest Vieux Château Certan wines produced over the past sixty years. It will undoubtedly close up in bottle, requiring a decade or more of cellaring. It should age for 50 years thereafter. Owner Thienpont considers it a modern version of the 1948 vintage."

As I wrote in my en primeur tasting notes, the 2009 stands alongside four of the legendary vintages from Vieux Château Certan’s past: 1945, 1947, 1948, and 1950. It is undoubtedly a purer wine than those older vintages, and the selection process under the direction of owner Alexandre Thienpont was far more rigorous in 2009 than it would have been sixty years ago." - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes

It is the oldest wine estate classified in Pomerol appellation - it dates back to the 16th century - Vieux Château Certan’s origines came from a Scottish family: the Demay family. It was bought by George Thienpont, a wine merchant practising in Belgium, in 1924, and has been run by his heirs since the end of the fifties.

The Vieux Château Certan estate is mentioned by the engineer geographer Belleyme on his famous 1785 map.
