CHATEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD, 2009

PAUILLAC

" The main reason why the Lafite Rothschild 2009 did not receive a perfect score is that the wine has slightly closed up, but it is undoubtedly another profound Lafite, their greatest wine since the incredible 2003 vintage. Among the most powerful Lafites ever produced (with an alcohol level of 13.59%), the final blend consists of 82.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the remainder Petit Verdot. The selection was extremely rigorous, with only 45% of the harvest used. A tight but potentially sumptuous nose of graphite, cassis, licorice, and camphor is followed by a full-bodied wine revealing Lafite's classic elegance, purity, and precise style. It has phenomenal concentration with softer tannins than the 2005, the voluptuous, ample, and juicy personality of the 2003, and low acidity. There are several vintages that I considered echoes of their colossal 1959, notably 1982 and 2003, but 2009 is also a vintage to watch. It is still extremely young and seems slightly more closed than I expected based on barrel tastings, but it needs 10 to 15 years of bottle aging and should last 50 years or more." - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes
The château located in Médoc, was classified as Premier Cru in the 1855 classification, in Pauillac appellation. The Château Lafite Rothschild history started in the 13th century.. Until the 17th century, the estate was a co-lordship whose co-owners received the rents from farmers who were cultivating the lands, some of which were already dedicated to the culture of vine. Between 1670 and 1680, Jacques de Ségure structured the vineyard. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired Château Lafite.
