PETRUS, 2004

POMEROL

"The dark plum/ruby-tinged 2004 Petrus possesses high acidity as well as copious amounts of sweet cherries and black currants intermixed with hints of cola, earth, and truffles. Deep, medium-bodied, concentrated, ripe flavors are excruciatingly firm and tannic. This backward, structured, muscular Pomerol requires a decade of cellaring, but it possesses the potential to be the longest lived wine of the vintage, lasting 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035." - Robert Parker

History and anecdotes

The Pétrus estate is located in the commune of Pomerol and owes its name to the locality where the vines grow. This place is said to have been named after the apostle Saint Peter (Petrus in Latin), depicted holding the keys to paradise on the Pétrus wine label. The estate does not have a château in the traditional sense.

The estate was purchased in 1925 by Edmonde Loubat, a hotelier in Libourne. Wanting to enhance the terroir, she partnered with Jean-Pierre Moueix, a wine merchant from Libourne. The estate's wines were then showcased at the finest tables, from the banquet of Queen Elizabeth II's wedding to the Kennedy family. Since 2001, Pétrus has belonged to the Moueix family. In 2018, 20% of the estate was sold to Alejandro Santo Domingo.

Pétrus has received a score of 100/100 from Robert Parker nine times for the vintages 2010, 2009, 2000, 1990, 1989, 1961, 1947, 1929, and 1921.
